Mixtape 52 - City of Caterpillar

Here is the 52nd installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Brandon Evans, Ryan Parrish and Kevin Longendyke of seminal screamo band City of Caterpillar.

The announcement that City of Caterpillar were coming to Malaysia was a big deal - big enough for me to consider putting off a trip back to Brooklyn. [It turned out that work and finances made those plans moot anyways.] I discovered the band during my post-college days, when I first moved to Malaysia and there was not much tethering me to life except the search for new music. It was a time when the boundaries between punk, metal, hardcore, and experimental music were fraying, and bands were deconstructing and recombining aspects of different genres to come up with new and exciting ways to play heavy music.

I sat down with Brandon, Ryan, and Kevin downstairs from Rumah Api before their headlining set at Not A Fest XXXVI. We discussed the events that led to this Asian tour, the band's history, and their thoughts on their legacy. We also discussed their plans for the future, which Ryan summed up thusly: "This is the future."

My thanks to Ci Chaan for helping coordinate the interview, to the band for speaking with me, and to you for listening.
