Death Metal World Cup: Cannabis Corpse vs Cannibal Corpse

This blog goes to bat for Cannabis Corpse quite regularly, but not without reason: Hidden behind the smoke of their one-note joke, the Richmond quartet are often overlooked for what a great band they actually are. From Wisdom to Baked sees them growing past merely invoking the Morrisound heyday to creating their most original and impressive album yet, peppered with shout-outs to Gorguts and later Death. In years when there isn’t a new Cannibal Corpse, these guys would be a worthy substitute.

However...there WAS a new Cannibal Corpse album this year, and it's fantastic. The non-metal world can’t seem to see past the band’s subject matter (and the size of Corpsegrinder's neck), while the wonkier hesher will dwell on their chops and technicality (guilty). But their consistency is what sets them apart from virtually every other band they played with. That they’re able to release album after album without any dip in quality is made all the more impressive by how prolific they’ve been over the years. Time marches on inexorably, and trends come and go, but Cannibal Corpse abides. I don’t know about you, but I take comfort in that.

THE MATCH UP: Cannibal Corpse have seen their share of imitators over the years, but none of them have ever really risen to their level. Besides: Marijuana is mostly seen as a harmless vice these days, but eating your fellow man will probably always be frowned upon.

WINNER: Cannibal Corpse
